Hiring and Keeping the Right People

Before joining LabTech Software, I spent several years working for a fast-growing MSP. The company was growing at a rapid pace and we were desperate to hire staff to meet our immediate needs. I made the choice to hire someone who I knew didn’t fit our company culture. My focus was on the certification instead of the person. While he had an impressive technical skillset, we kept receiving complaints from clients. In the end, I had to make the decision to let him go. Even though he seemed like the perfect choice on paper, the cultural clash was too big of a risk to the business.

Finding the right people to staff your company is about more than filling seats. Each staff member brings their own unique knowledge, perspective, experience and strength. Having a diverse staff helps to provide a different outlook on your business plans, and can sometimes be the perfect way to get through a plateau or solve a difficult problem.

But how do you find the right people? And once you find them, how do you make sure they stay?

Keeping your employees engaged begins with defining your company culture. Once you’re clear on the atmosphere you want to encourage, make sure your hiring process takes that into account, so that new staff fits well into the culture. The right cultural fit is just as important as the right technical skillset, maybe even more so. Technical skills can be taught, but personalities aren’t as easily influenced.

If your current culture doesn’t align with your business goals, make the changes you need to bring them into alignment. Once you’re confident that your culture and vision are in sync, you can start creating value-based job postings. Use scorecards to describe how each position supports the company mission and demonstrates the culture, or ask job candidates to explain how they’ve demonstrated each of your core values in a previous job.

If you’re faced with a current employee who isn’t exemplifying your core values, release them. You need engaged employees to grow and drive your business forward. Keeping your core values at the forefront of your hiring process means you’ll get the right people for the job. And having the right people leads to happy employees who work harder and longer towards your end-goal of client satisfaction and retention.

At LabTech Software, our core values are infused into our hiring process, new employee training, and every day work life. By keeping our values firmly ingrained in everything we do, we can make sure every employee is dedicated to our mission, and that employee success and company success happen together. You’ll find the same is true when you let your culture and core values guide your hiring processes.
